Award Descriptions
Unified Champion of Schools Award
The Unified award is made up of four core components: Inclusive Sports, Youth Leadership and Advocacy, and Whole School Engagement. This program combines high school Special Olympic Athletes and Athletes without intellectual disabilities (partners) as teammates in the sports of basketball and volleyball at EGHS. These teams provide training and competition with other high schools in the state. The best team is one in which all teammates (athletes and partners) play a meaningful role and contribute to the success of that team. Awards are being presented to those individuals that best define Unified Sports.
Carcieri Awards – Sportsmanship
Presented to Senior Student Athletes in recognition of outstanding excellence, integrity and honorable conduct in sports. This award commemorates the athletic values established for generations of Avengers, by legendary EGHS Coach and Athletic Director, Nick Carcieri, during his 38 years at EGHS. The Carcieri era was marked by the highest number of multiple team and state championships, as well as by the many standout EGHS athletes who set numerous RI school records. Coach Carcieri was known as a tremendous coach, a mentor to many and a lifetime educator to all of the students he touched and inspired.
Uustal Awards – Most Valuable Athletes
Presented to the most outstanding Senior Student Athletes who have distinguished themselves in both athletic ability and in personal achievement during their four years at EGHS. This award is named for Dr. Uno Uustal, who with his wife and family, came to the United States in 1948 from Estonia. In 1952, Dr. Uustal set up a family physicians practice on Main Street, soon becoming both the public schools and athletic team's doctor. At every athletic event, Dr. Uustal could be seen on the sidelines tending to whatever need arose, often including one of his four sons, who over the years played football for the Avengers. From 1952 until his death in 1981, Dr. Uustal was an integral member of the EGHS community. Dr. Uustal was known for his commitment and service to athletics, community and family, ideals and standards applied to all EGHS Athletics.
Scholar Athlete Awards
Earned by two Senior Student Athletes who have achieved excellence both academically and athletically at EGHS.
Leadership Awards
Awarded to two Senior Student Athletes who demonstrated leadership and dedication to their team. They display a strong work ethic, are dependable and trustworthy. Team members look up to them.
Team Player and Spirit Awards
Presented to two Senior Student Athletes who acted as the ultimate team players, regardless of playing time. They showed pride in their team, encouraged others and had a motivational attitude. These athletes have put aside personal goals for the benefit of the team.
Love of the Game Awards
Presented to two Senior Student Athletes who have displayed a deep affection for the game they play. They are ambassadors of the game and sport through their hard work and dedication.
Citizen Athlete Awards
Two Senior Student Athletes who have given back to the community through service projects, volunteer work or another avenue of civic or community participation, in addition to participating in high school sports and maintaining their academics.
Forbes Financial Planning Scholarship
The Forbes Financial Planning scholarship is designed to recognize and reward the positive impact EGBA has had on its participants—both on the court and beyond. The award seeks to highlight individuals who exemplify the values, lessons, and sense of community fostered through EGBA involvement.
Raise the Bar Community Scholarship
The Raise the Bar Community Scholarship was created to recognize students who embody the spirit of leadership, teamwork and community impact. At Raise the Bar, we believe that success is not just measured by personal achievements, but by how we uplift and inspire those around us. This scholarship is awarded to three senior athletes who demonstrate strong character both on and off the field, who lead by example, support their peers, and contribute positively to their school and community.
Coach Deb McMullen Impact Award – sponsored by EGYFH
This inaugural award embodies a long-standing commitment to the East Greenwich field hockey community, both on and off the field. It celebrates the player and the person who brings positivity to her teammates, dedication and participation in the EG Youth Field Hockey program (as a player and a coach) and does so with grit and grace.
Even Field Award
Even Field Honors program with the RIIL recognizes student-athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and game officials who exhibit character, resilience, and principled leadership.
Arthur Kershaw True Avenger Awards
These awards are presented to Senior Student Athletes who have represented East Greenwich High School with pride and dignity in their athletic endeavors. The awards are named for Arthur Kershaw, who served for over thirty years as EGHS Athletic Director, coach and teacher. Coach Kershaw was known as a man of selfless dedication to all EGHS students. His wit, insight and wisdom have left a personal legacy built upon the pillars of sportsmanship, teamwork and the true Avengers spirit.
Avengers "12 Season" Athlete Awards
These athletes have participated in all seasons of their four-year EGHS career. From the fall of freshman year to the spring of senior year, these students have been part of the EGHS Avengers Athletic Program.
The Avengers Booster Club Scholarships
Six Senior Student Athletes are recognized by an independent, 5-person panel of East Greenwich community leaders who do not have a current EGHS student. Each Student Athlete is awarded $1,000 each, based on their accomplishments as athletes, scholars and as individuals showing leadership, sportsmanship and dedication during their high school career.

The Avengers Booster Club would like to extend its gratitude to EGHS Athletic Director, Casie Rhodes, and all of the Coaches, Assistant Coaches, Trainers, Faculty & Staff who have supported and guided our Student Athletes at EGHS.
We have had a year full of accomplishments and are proud to celebrate our dedicated Senior Student Athletes. This evening is made possible through the efforts of The Avengers Booster Club, whose mission is to support the activities and efforts of all EGHS Student Athletes through increased and enhanced community involvement, fundraising activities and recognition of both team and individual achievement.
